University of Pennsylvania Student Excavation Reports (1960-1970)
University of Pennsylvania Student Excavation Reports (1960-1970) in the John Cotter Papers Collection (Penn Museum Archives)
The following list of archaeological reports (gray literature) is housed in the Archives of the University of Pennsylvania Archaeology and Anthropology Museum (Penn Museum). These reports are archived as part of the John L. Cotter Personal Papers Collection (1911-1999).
Archaeological reports for several Philadelphia area projects were produced in the 1960s and 70s by graduate and undergrad students working under the direction of University of Pennsylvania Adjunct Professor and NPS Regional Archeologist John L. Cotter. Cotter divided up site research duties among his students who completed the work as part of their coursework (namely as part of Department of American Civilization courses #571 and #572, Methods and Problems of Historical Archaeology). These student reports comprise individual sections of the larger reporting done for the field projects.
The reports are related to projects undertaken at the following locations:
- 8 South Front Street
- Athenaeum Garden
- Bonnin & Morris Porcelain Factory Site
- Cypress Street
- Dock Street
- Fallsington,
- Federal Building Site
- Fort Mifflin
- Frankford Creek Site 'Glass House'

Note: The Cotter Papers at the Penn Archives constitute approximately 13.7 Linear feet of files. This particular list of reports comprises the cataloging 'Series' entitled ‘Excavation Reports (Alphabetical by Author) [Unprocessed Records]’. Most of these reports are likely stored in boxes 15-18 Teaching: Classes (1.7 feet) or boxes 18-25 Teaching: Class Projects (3.3 feet) --although some may be in files catalogues as Field Projects (boxes 11-14). At present, only a handful of the reports listed below have their specific folder and box location identified. As these locations become further identified this list will be updated.
PAF thanks Penn Museum Archivist Alessandro Pezatti for making this list available to PAF.
